Johannesburg-based painter Wilhelm Saayman presents his new solo exhibition at Erdmann Contemporary in Cape Town. In Season Five Everyone Dies is the fruit of Saayman’s febrile imagination: his paintings are done from the perspective of an alter ego who has lived in seclusion for decades, and is therefore particularly struck by the selfish cruelty and hypocrisy of the human race. The garish greens and reds of Saayman’s palette convey comic irony and cynicism at the same time, transposing the ugliness of the internal condition onto the surface of the canvas.
Saayman sardonically observes in his artist’s statement: “What surprised me most was that I had painted people so accurately for so many decades while being all alone on that sliver of land… They truly were bags of air filled with self-importance, greed and nonsensical opinions.” Combining text, imagery and black humour, In Season Five Everyone Dies is a malediction on the violent corruption of society.
In Season Five Everyone Dies is showing at Erdmann Contemporary from 15 May to 27 July.
