Truth and Lies Lecture by Joep van Lieshout

Rotterdam-based artist Joep van Lieshout to present a lecture at Whitechapel Gallery in London.

Rotterdam-based artist Joep van Lieshout will present a lecture at Whitechapel Gallery in London on Tuesday 10 December at 19.00.

As part of the 'Truth and Lies' lecture series, guest speaker van Lieshout will talk about his work and the ongoing project New Tribal Labyrinth. This body of work – which also is the focus of a forthcoming book from St-W (see here) – suggests a new world order, a society inhabited by imaginary tribes. This world will see a return to farming and industry, which currently both have been banished from our society, and a re-establishment of our relationship with materials – which now has been lost. Rituals will be re-valued, and will play in important role in society once more. Thus, objects for farming, industry and rituals are the three main bodies of work of this huge 'Gesamtkunstwerk'.

Since the early 1980s, Joep van Lieshout has produced objects in mainly bright coloured polyester, the material that would become his trademark in subsequent years. In 1995, he founded (AVL), which has attained international recognition for objects that balance on the boundary between art, architecture and design. These works of art are practical, uncomplicated and substantial. Recurring themes in the work of AVL are autarky, power and politics, as well as the more classical themes of life and death.

The lecture will start at 19.00 on Tuesday 10 December. Tickets £8/£6 concessions. Booking for this event is essential. Please call +44 20 7522 7888 to check availability and to book with a credit or debit card.
