The Stranger Within by Studio Formafantasma

The Geymüllerschlössel has a permanent exhibit of 160 antique Viennese clocks.

Studio Formafantasma have staged a design intervention at the stately home setting of  as the second edition of the  Design Salon series in Vienna, Austria. Taking society’s hesitance to the foreign or strange as a theme, Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi of Studio Formafantasma have used objects produced by their studio to create a dialogue with the Empire and Niedemeier interiors of the Geymüllerschlössel.

The Stranger Within incorporates a total of seven interventions in different parts of the house, reflecting on references to the exotic in the architecture. The focal point of the display is the Nodus Rug which was designed in collaboration with the Italian producer Nodus especially for Geymüllerschlössel's Blue Salon. The surrounding interior is referenced in the colours and textures of the rug which is suspended like an oversized mask in the middle of the salon, functions  as a ‘mystical metaphor of the foreign’.

Studio Formafantasma’s previous series Botanica and Craftica were further developed for the exhibition. The vessels from the Botanica series – a collection which investigated alternative materials to plastic through the possibilities of natural polymers – finds new relevance when placed alongside a bouquet of artificial flowers made from butterfly wings from c. 1840.

The Stranger Within will run until 1 December at the Branch, Geymüllerschlössel. Pötzleinsdorferstraße 102, 1180, Vienna
