St. Petersburg Pier ‘Wave’

The structure could be used as a concert or exhibition venue, board walk, boat pier, market place or banquet hall.

ST. PETERSBURG – It seems like a week can’t go by without another major announcement from Danish firm BIG! Their project proposal of today is the Wave, to potentially be constructed in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The concept is one of three finalists in the St. Petersburg Pier International Design Competition, which is seeking to reconstruct the city’s waterfront area. BIG's proposed Wave would be multifunctional; it could be used as a view point, pavilion, boat pier, market place, banquet hall, exhibition space, boardwalk and stage.

‘The Wave pier is shaped by the life within and around it, and is flexible and open to change,’ says Bjarke Ingels of BIG. ‘Its strong form and generous spaces can accommodate a multitude of programs – either one single destination or multiple individual activities or tenants.’

The other two finalist designs were created by West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architecture and Michael Maltzan Architecture.
