PARIS – Plateforme de la Creation Architecturale is a new venue dedicated to architectural exhibitions and debates which recently opened in the Palais de Chaillot, near Trocadéro in the heart of the French capital. The space was designed by FREAKS freearchitects in association with graphic design studio FormaBoom.
‘A place to confront architects’ thinking and methodology in the shape of a battle, through both an exhibition and a cycle of debates,’ is how architect Guillaume Aubry describes the project. The permanent venue is run by Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine, the organisation responsible for inviting different architecture firms to ‘battle’ within the space for a three month period.
The raw fabric of the building has been left exposed to reveal the marks of wear on the interior. Blasts of colour – applied to the walls with a conventional fire extinguisher – distinguish the three programmes hosted within the venue: exhibition, debate and historical research. Aubry continues, ‘The colours turn the whole space into a giant playground that architects are invited to take over and invest.’
A crisp, graphic language designed by FormaBoom completes the scheme. Printed in black and white onto A0 paper sheets and secured with magnets, the signage can easily be adapted and updated to correspond with each cycle of competitors. The two firms currently on display at the venue are French practice X’TU Architects and Belgian practice 51N4E.
