Amsterdam – On 21 and 22 February 2018, St-W will play host to the international interior and object design summit of the year at St-W Lab. Talks by industry leaders like Ben van Berkel and innovative exhibitions by renowned brands will showcase the latest works and ideas addressing the future of spatial design.
Held in the Westergasfabriek, a former gas-holder and now architecturally unique event venue, St-W Lab presents thought-provoking designs such as Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Julica Morlok’s seating objects Virtual Materiality.
Resembling human body parts, the soft, tangled structures confront the thoughtless relationship we have adopted with the chairs and sofas we use every day. At the same time, Virtual Materiality provides users with the feeling of being supported and held by (dismembered) limbs and torsos – acquiring a ‘living’ character that can be comforting or disgusting.
To achieve a skin-like feel, the designer worked with Recticel Flexible Foams – a company in Kesteren, the – then covered the foamy structures with a semi-transparent stretch latex. The result triggers a wide variety of responses from fascination to repulsion, inviting people to reconsider their interactions with the seating objects and with chairs in general. Morlok’s Virtual Materiality offer a sensorial alternative that goes beyond the aesthetically pleasing status quo in the industry.
