Cameo by Razvan Boar

Romanian artist is known for his paintings and collages, which reflect the fragmentary, disorientating nature of our world. His second solo exhibition at Ana Cristea Gallery demonstrates a remarkable shift from his signature monochromatic palette into vibrantly coloured works that are suffused with energy and rhythm. Boar uses colour and pattern to trigger the viewer’s awareness of visual codes comprising symbols, signs and ideographs that pass into our subconsciousness due to their ubiquity.

Boar slyly introduces an array of double entendres in his work by referring to familiar cultural signs that are reinforced through advertisements, cartoons, children’s book illustrations, comics and films. Engaging with questions informing Surrealism, fantasy and the uncanny, his work enters into the dialogue within contemporary painting without being tied down by its constructs.

Cameo is on until 12 October.
